If the slip/trip occurs at your workplace – see the accidents at work heading. If it occurs in a public place you generally need to be able to show that the section of public path/highway is in such a bad state of disrepair that it was rendered dangerous to the public as a consequence and that injury was foreseeable.
The Local Authority will normally have a defence if it can show a reasonable system of inspection/maintenance or that the defect in question is not what an ordinary person would consider inherently dangerous.
Photographs of the defective path/highway and, if possible, independent witnesses in support will greatly assist in obtaining a decision on liability in these types of claims.
